Multimodal transportation

WHAT WE DO

UNITED GLOBAL LOGISTICS specialists are guided by two key principles in creating a transportation project:

  • minimum transit time;
  • optimal competitive rates.

Organization of transportation considering these requirements is the guarantee of the successful delivery of any type of cargo to anywhere in the world.

What is multimodal transportation, and why is it needed?

Multimodal transportation in logistics, also known as multi-carrier transportation, describes the use of different vehicles (e.g., trucks, trains, ships) and other modes of transport (road, rail, water). Multimodal and intermodal transportation is one of the safe and fastest delivery options.

Features of multimodal transportation

Multimodal transport involves at least two or more modes of transportation, such as trucking to a domestic port followed by delivery to a foreign port and then crossing the border abroad. Standard transport units, such as containers, are often used in multimodal transport to simplify the loading of cargoes to allow a seamless change of mode of transportation.

Intermodal transportation is often used synonymously with multimodal transportation but properly represents a particular subtype of multimodal transport. In intermodal logistics, vehicles are replaced using standard shipping containers, such as containers or other interchangeable bodies. This way, the cargo changes the car in a closed transport unit.

Several ways to define international multimodal transportation:

  • Signing a contract with a company that is engaged in multimodal transport.
  • For the organization of multimodal transport, use two or more modes.
  • Companies may engage other similar organizations for transportation.

For multimodal and intermodal transportation to go well, the organizing company must adequately plan the route.

When to use multimodal transportation

Transportation is always handled multimodally if it is impossible in the direct lift without changing the vehicle or overloading. In most cases, the reason for this is spatial. For example, the cargos to be transported are produced domestically and must first be delivered to the port by truck, as the transport to the destination is by sea. It is also possible that sections of the route may be taken by rail.

Multimodal transportation does not limit the volume of transported cargo. With the help of containers used in this type of transport, any cargo can be transported. Their standardized dimensions allow for convenient packing and transportation of cargos quickly and without problems, without repacking cargoes throughout the journey.

With the help of containers, you can transport cargos in cardboard boxes, pallets. You can transport bulk, liquid, oversized, hazardous cargoes, cargos that require a special temperature regime.
